Four-month-old babies may using crying to demonstrate when they need something. They are able to recognize signs of hunger, discomfort, such as bored or wet diapers, or when they are sleepy.

By nine months a baby’s hand muscles and motor skills should allow them to pick up something small and light, such as a piece of cereal or small toy, between their thumb and forefinger.
