What is the term that refers to the dark line that some pregnant woman get which runs down their stomach?
Though it may be referred to as the pregnancy line, its more technical label is linea nigra. Around three quarters of pregnant women will manifest a linea nigra, which is a brownish stripe that runs vertically down the stomach. There exact cause of this mark has not been ascertained, and it will typically manifest around the fifth month mark, though it can develop later.
Women who consume excessive amounts of caffeine while in the early months of their pregnancy have a greater chance of miscarrying.
Studies have found that women who consumed around 200 milligrams of caffeine daily, which is the equivalent of two cups of regular coffee a day, were twice as likely to suffer from a miscarriage. A pituitary or hypothalamic tumor would be a rare finding in these patients who were all screened with prolactin levels at the beginning of the diagnostic evaluation. However, if there is no cause apparent from the history, it is sometimes suggested to get a baseline CT or MRI scan of the sellar region to rule out a (very rare) tumor.
